Triablogue: The Oracles of God – The Temple Archives as the Original “Canon”

This post from Steve Hays at Triablogue quotes Andrew Steinmann, in his The Oracles of God: The Old Testament Canon (Concordia 1999).  The book surveys the history of the formation of the Hebrew Scriptures into the Canon.  The passage quoted makes the point that before canon was thought of as a “list” of accepted books, it was simply what sacred writings were stored in the Jerusalem Temple archives.  Said differently, the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD is what led to the need for “canonical lists.”
