Evangelical Christianity Makes Churchgoing a Commandment

How important do evangelicals think church is?  Scot McKnight is a respected evangelical who speaks for the movement when he says:

No one would suggest that church attendance is the perfect measure of discipleship, but neither would anyone deny it is at least a baseline measure.  – Scot McKnight, preface, The King Jesus Gospel

And yet, there is no biblical basis for making this a commandment.  What is a commandment is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves.  That’s something I wish evangelicals would teach and practice more.
