Our Sexual Morality Is That Held for 6,000 Years by Jews and Christians Alike

The standards of sexual morality to which we cling are not merely those from 2,000 of church history, but from 6,000 years of Judeo-Christian history.

We Christians did not invent sexual morality.  We inherited it from the Jews (John 4:22).

Judaism does not date back 6000 years, but certainly some common rules about sexual behavior can be found in ancient cultures. For me, its origins don’t need to be old, if they are beneficical. However, deviant sexual behavior existed thousands of years before contraception and coincided with the advent of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Women had NO RIGHTS. They were married, sold orotherwise passed on by men in the mostly patriarchal world that is HUMAN history. They could be raped by their spouses, killed by their fathers and have their babies given to false gods. In the God tradition, human sacrifice was not a factor, but even so women received awful treatment all through the middle ages – the height of so said Christian power. For me, sexual morality is a not only a matter of morality, but of my personal dignity. Knowing that in history, my having a V, made me a sexual target in every kind of society. Today, it is not much better, except that in the developed world, laws, to some some extent protect women from sexual degradation. Ultimately, women armed with self-respect will choose abstinence if only to prevent being taken advantage of emotionally and to avoid the physical pitfalls of promiscuity: unwanted pregnancy, disease, maybe regret and worst of all – the realization that all the great sex in the world will not be a reason for a man who doesn’t love you to “put a ring on it.”

Like all political factions, feminism views history in terms of the interests of its constituents. In order to maintain the support of its constituents, it views the past negatively and the future positively – and positive specifically because of the hopes and efforts of the faction and its leaders. It’s all about increasing power. As is true for feminism, so also for all political factions – even conservative Christians when operating as a political faction.

Judeo-Christian history, by contrast, reaches all the way back to the beginning of human history – some 6,000 years ago, and gives a peek at things from God’s point of view. It’s eye-opening. He wants us to see that true freedom of heart comes not from demanding our rights but rather from trusting God and doing good. As He told us through the prophet Micah: “He has shown you what is good: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” – Micah 6:8.
