Proponents of same-sex “marriage” say they want “marriage equality.” This is Orwellian language designed to disguise what is taking place and to put any opponent on the defensive (as in “Only a bigot would be against equality”).
The disguise is this: if the Supreme Court gives same-sex “marriage” the same legal status as marriage, then we will have a definition of marriage going forward that is unequal to the definition of marriage that has been in place for all of time up until now.
Aside from the absurdity of a group of nine adults making this decision and thereby usurping the decision-making authority of a democracy of almost 200 million adults perfectly capable of voting themselves on the issue, there is the greater absurdity of making marriage in the future unequal to what it has been for all time in the past – and calling this a move to “marriage equality.”
This is just one more example of the Orwellian language that infecting public discussion of important issues.
Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! – Isaiah 5:20
