DUBLIN (AP) — Irish voters backed legalizing gay marriage by a landslide, according to electoral figures announced Saturday — a stunning result that illustrates the rapid social change taking place in this traditionally…
As a minor point, it’s worthy clarifying what constitutes a “landslide” for the Associated Press: 6 out 10 voted in favor of the proposition (62.1%). If one of ten voters had changed his mind, the vote would have been split; and if two had changed their minds, the decision would have been a “landslide” the other way. Such are the ways that modern media uses language. (Nevertheless, I can’t imagine the media calling it a “landslide” if the vote had been 6 to 4 the other way. Instead, I can imagine the headline reading “Support for SSM Growing in Latest Referendum.”)
As for the major point, why is it that these Irish voters think that they are wiser on this subject than all humanity before them? It’s not just Judeo-Christian culture that they are rejecting; it’s practical every culture that ever was.
Given this abundance of hubris, we should not be surprised that the winners have appropriated for themselves metaphors previously applied to the Lord Jesus Christ (emphasis added):
“We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world, of liberty and equality. So it’s a very proud day to be Irish,” said Leo Varadkar, a Cabinet minister who came out as gay at the start of a government-led effort to amend Ireland’s conservative Catholic constitution.
Move over, Western Civilization; modernity has decided to kill you and dance on your grave.
All you who rejoice over this day, beware. All you who grieve over this day, remember:
God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. – Galatians 6:7
This is a sad day for those who love righteousness. Pray that God may show us mercy in the awful judgments that are coming.
