What makes us blind to the obvious?

“When we lack the will to see things as they really are, there is nothing so mystifying as the obvious.” – Irving Kristol

Therefore, check your will…and make sure that it is subordinated to God’s.  He loves you and is wiser than you, so wouldn’t His will be better for you than yours?

Is Godless Democracy Any Better Than Godless Communism?

During the Cold War, America and the West resisted “godless Communism” at every turn.  Ultimately, America and the West prevailed – most notably through the leadership of Ronald Reagan and the ultimate symbolic destruction of the Berlin Wall.

Yet how much better off are we now?  The same democracies that rejected communism have embraced the secularism that was an essential part of communism.

Yes, as bad off as Kim Davis finds herself in a godless democracy, she is better off than she would have been under godless communism.  But given the direction things are going, and the speed at which they’re going, how much longer will that remain true?

Godless democracy leads to the same place that godless communism leads – godlessness.

And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner?  –  1 Peter 4:18

Therefore, let us pursue godliness, lest we be swept away with the rest.

As Babies in the Womb, So Are We in this Life

Can there be another life after this one?

In a mother’s womb were two babies. One asked the other:
“Do you believe in life after delivery?” The other replied, “Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later.”
“Nonsense” said the first. “There is no life after delivery. What kind of life would that be?”
The second said, “I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths. Maybe we will have other senses that we can’t understand now.”
The first replied, “That is absurd. Walking is impossible. And eating with our mouths? Ridiculous! The umbilical cord supplies nutrition and everything we need. But the umbilical cord is so short. Life after delivery is to be logically excluded.”
The second insisted, “Well I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here. Maybe we won’t need this physical cord anymore.”
The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”
The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”
The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.”
Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”
To which the second replied, “Sometimes, when you’re in silence and you focus and you really listen, you can perceive Her presence, and you can hear Her loving voice, calling down from above.”

Democrats Becoming Less Christian

This article is based on the same recently-released Pew Research Center’s Religious Landscape Study that I posted about yesterday (Americans Becoming Less Religious, Especially Young Adults).

I know that many Christians are disappointed with the Republican party, and I understand that.  Indeed, they promise policies that they do not always aggressively pursue.  But the Democrat party actually makes promises to pursue policies that are hostile to Christian interests (e.g. abortion on demand, sexual licentiousness over religious liberty, etc.).  Who does you more harm – the friend who doesn’t always keep his promises…or the enemy who is working against you at every turn?

Though our salvation is not to be found in politics, our Lord expects us to be responsible citizens which means at the very least that we should vote.  Republicans may not be much of a choice, but increasingly they are the only choice.

Excerpt:

For the first time on record, fewer than two-thirds of Democrats and “Democratic-leaning” adults now identify with any branch of Christianity, the study found, down 11 percentage points since 2007. The decline in the number of Christians among Democrats was the single largest drop among the groups evaluated in the study.

In 2007, Catholics made up the largest single religious group in the Democratic Party, with 24 percent of the total. With a decrease to 21 percent, Catholics have now been superseded by the unaffiliated as the leading religious contingent among Democrats.

Nearly three-in-ten Democrats now say they have no religion whatsoever, up 9 points since Pew’s last Religious Landscape Study.

Americans becoming less religious, especially young adults: poll | Reuters

The proportion of Americans who say they are “absolutely certain” God exists fell…to 63 percent in 2014 from 71 percent in 2007.

Is it any wonder that faith in God has declined significantly in the last 7 years?  Think about what has happened in this country and its culture in the last 7 years.  And keep in mind that this survey is as of 2014.  Once 2015 events are incorporated, the declines will be even greater.  Remember that Jesus said:

“Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.”  –  Matthew 24:12

Hold fast your faith.  Others are losing theirs; don’t become one of them!

Recognizing What We’re Up Against

Secular ethics have displaced Judeo-Christian ethics as the dominant cultural view in America.  We need to face this reality.  It is not a pretty picture.

This first video clip (2:52) is taken from the Q&A section of a lecture by attorney Roberta Kaplan who argued the 2013 Windsor case in the Supreme Court, which overturned the Defense of Marriage Act and paved the way for the 2015 Obergefell case which legalized same-sex “marriage.”  Notice not just her remarks and demeanor, but also that of the moderator and audience – all of whom not only consider themselves entirely victorious in the culture war on this matter but also consider us to be people worthy of rejection, derision, and mocking laughter.

This second clip (14:19) is from Ryan Anderson in which he discusses his recent book on the matter.  As winsome as he is, and as respectful to the other side as he is, I cannot imagine the other side accepting his proposed truce of live and let live.  You’ll recall what happened with the proposed Indiana and Arkansas RFRA laws earlier this year.

In spite of all this, God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7).  He will judge sin and those who mock Him will be brought to shame.  Though we should not withdraw from the political realm (because God expects us to be responsible citizens), we should not expect a political remedy until and unless there is a massive spiritual awakening in the country.  In the absence of that (and we are certainly absent of it now), God will deliver us as individuals and families since the nation has turned its back on Him.
